Tuesday February 12

The league picked up the pace on Tuesday night with 9 games on the schedule. Teams are slipping and sliding their way along as we inch closer to the trade deadline and the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Nobody really seems prepared to go quietly and if they can help Former Islanders are trying to boost their teams. Let us take a quick look at the FI happenings:

* Zdeno Chara assisted on the too-little-too-late goal with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation as the Boston Bruins fell to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. Chara has 9 goals and 28 assists for 37 points on 56 games. He has 2 goals and an assist over the last 3 games.

* Tim Connolly, in only his 2nd game back since suffering an injury in early January, had 2 assists as the Buffalo Sabres thumped the host Ottawa Senators 5-1. Both of Connolly's helpers came on the powerplay. He now has 5 goals and 26 assists for 31 points on 36 games. Connolly has scored 14 of those points (2 goals, 12 assists) on the man advantage. Randy Robitaille scored the lone Sens' goal, a powerplay tally. Robitaille has 9 goals and 13 assists for 22 points on 46 games. It was the first powerplay goal of the season and only his 3rd point up a man. With the netter he snapped a 6 game goal-less streak.

* The glory days of Chris Osgood's excellent play seem to have passed. Ozzie was pulled only 8:49 into the 1st period after surrendering 3 goals on only 4 shots. Following the 4-2 Detroit Red Wings loss to the host Nashville Predators Osgood fell to 22-6-2 on the season. His goals against average swelled to 2.09 (the first time in recent memory it has been above 2.00) while his save percentage fell to .917. He has lost his last 3 starts between February 7-12. He is currently tied for 2nd in the NHL is save percentage behind teammate Dominik Hasek by .002 and fell out of the top 10 in save percentage, currently tied with Martin Brodeur.

* Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov assisted on the insurance goal as the Edmonton Oilers knocked off the visiting Minnesota Wild 4-2. Grebeshkov has 1 goal and 7 assists for 8 points on 47 games. Minnesota d-man Sean Hill had a powerplay assist on the final goal of the game. Hill has 3 assists on 23 games this season with 2 of those helpers coming on the man advantage. With the assist Hill snapped a 7 game point-less streak.
