Newest FIs: Bergeron & Simon

Both defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and winger Chris Simon were traded at the deadline for draft picks making them the newest FIs this season. Bergeron was sent to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 3rd round pick in the upcoming 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Bergeron's booming shot will be missed at the blueline but it appears that he never fit in with the Isles coaching staff, especially notable after a scrap earlier in the season with assistant coach Gerard Gallant. Chris Simon was sent to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 6th round pick in the draft, as well.

Bergeron played 69 games over the last 2 seasons with the Isles after arriving in a trade that sent defensive prospect Denis Grebeshkov to the Edmonton Oilers. Bergeron has 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points over that time including 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) on the powerplay. A gentlemanly d-man, he managed only 26 penalty minutes along with 2 game winning goals, a -9 rating and a healthy shooting percentage of .099.

The troubled Simon played 105 games over the last 2 seasons with the Islanders missing 55 while sitting out 2 separate, record-setting suspensions. Simon had 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points. He compiled 118 penalty minutes, a healthy +16 rating and 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) on the man advantage. He never found a spark this season managing only 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points on 28 games.

We wish the newest FIs all the best. We have more news to report so check in soon at FIW.

Monday February 11

Sunday February 10

It was a freakish night around the NHL as Former Islander Richard Zednik was slashed on the neck by the skate of teammate and fellow FI Olli Jokinen. The blade of Jokinen's skate cut Zednik's carotid artery nearly severing the vein that delivers fresh blood to the brain. Zed was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. As of Monday morning he was in stable condition at a Buffalo hospital. We wish him a quick and speedy recovery. We here at FIW were sadly reminded of the freak accident that nearly caused the loss of Bryan Berard's eye during the 1999-2000 season while with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In other news, there were 8 games on the schedule on Sunday night. Teams are battling for important points in the standings. Let us take a look at the FI efforts from a scary night around the league:

* Martin Straka had an assist and Stephen Valiquette took an OT loss as the New York Rangers fell to the Washington Capitals 3-2. Straka has 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points on 42 games. He snapped a 3 game point-less streak with the helper. With the OTL Valiquette fell to 4-3-2 on the season. He has an impressive .915 save percentage and a nice 2.19 goals against average in his first full season of backup work.

* Mathieu Schneider scored a goal and assisted on the game winner as the Anaheim Ducks beat the host Detroit Red Wings 3-2. Schneids has 8 goals and 20 assists for 28 points on 43 games. Chris Osgood took the loss in net for Detroit stopped 16 of 19 shots. Ozzie fell to 22-5-2 on the season with an impeccable 1.99 goals against average and a .921 save percentage with 3 shutouts. It was the first time Osgood has had consecutive regulation losses since March 25-31, 2006, a span of 53 games, nearly 2 years without such an occurrence!

* Michael Peca had 2 powerplay assists and new teammate Dick Tarnstrom notched his first point with Columbus as the Blue Jackets lost in SO to the visiting Los Angeles Kings 3-2. Peca has 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists) on 43 games. He has 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) on the man advantage. It is the first time since the before the lockout that Peca has scored 25 points on a season. The last time he did it was 2003-04 while still with the Isles. Peca also was stopped on his SO attempt in the 3rd round. Playing in his first game with the Jackets since being traded from Edmonton, Tarnstrom scored his first point assisting on the game tying goal. He has 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points on 30 games. It was his 2nd powerplay assist of the season.

* Defenseman Eric Brewer assisted on the game tying powerplay goal as the St. Louis Blues fell to the visiting Minnesota Wild 2-1. Brewer has 1 goal and 14 assists for 15 points on 49 games. He has 5 assists on the man advantage. Over the last 4 games, Brewer has 4 assists.

Olli Jokinen scored the 2nd Florida goal with 58 seconds remaining the 2nd period. He has 29 goals and 29 assists for 58 points on 58 games. That is a whole lot of 58. He is currently running at a point per game pace.

* Mike York assisted on the Coyotes' 2nd goal as the Nashville Predators doubled up on host Phoenix for a 6-3 win. York has 13 points (6 goals, 7 assists) on 50 games.

* Roberto Luongo stopped 16 of a meager 18 shots as the Vancouver Canucks beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in SO. Luongo also stopped all 3 shots he faced in the SO to improve to 24-18-6 on the season with a .922 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. Tuesday February 5

They called it Super Tuesday. No not the primary elections, the 10 games that dominated and continued to help define the playoff chase as the NHL rapidly nears the end of the regular season. Some teams continue to rise while others are sinking like stones. Former Islanders are helping out their teams through resurgences and sufferings. Let us take a look at the FI efforts from a busy night around the league:

* Todd Bertuzzi assisted on the final goal as the Anaheim Ducks blanked the host Isles 3-0. Bert has 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points on 43 games. He snapped a 4 game point-less streak with the helper. It was his first point against his original team since he recorded a hat trick against them January 14, 2006 while still playing with the Vancouver Canucks.

* Tom Poti scored the game tying goal with less than 7 minutes remaining in regulation then assisted on the game winner OT as the Washington Capitals pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the host Columbus Blue Jackets. The goal was Poti's first of the season. He now has 1 goal and 14 assists for 15 points on 45 games. It was his first multi-point game since November 23, 2006. He went 50 games without a goal including 5 playoff games from last season. Teammate Viktor Kozlov assisted on Washington's 2nd goal which briefly knotted the game in the second period. Kozzer has 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points on 54 games. Jackets' center Michael Peca had an assist on his team's 2nd goal. Peca has a respectable 22 points (4 goals, 18 assists) on 40 games. * Randy Robitaille assisted on Ottawa's second goal as the Senators fell to the host Montreal Canadiens 4-3. Robby has 8 goals and 13 assists for 21 points on 43 games.

Additionally Zednik's first goal was the game winner. He now has 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists) on 51 games. Zednik has 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist) over his last 2 and has 6 powerplay goals and 5 game winners on the season. It was Zednik's first 4 point night since April 21, 2002 when he scored 2 goals and 2 assists in a first round playoff matchup against the Boston Bruins while with the Montreal Canadiens. As well, it was the first hat trick for Zed since October 31, 2000 as a Washington Capital, a span of 466 games! Also getting involved was captain Olli Jokinen who notched a goal and an assist. He has been particularly productive recently with 3 assists over his last 2 competitions.

* Roberto Luongo cannot buy a win and Taylor Pyatt should not be taking SO attempts. O, the woes of the Canucks. Luongo and crew fell in the SO to the host Dallas Stars 3-2. The Vancouver goalie has been relatively unsuccessful as of late. Luongo stopped 32 of 34 between regulation and OT and 4 of 6 in the SO but it was not enough to stop his recent slide. He fell to 22-17-6 on the season. Luongo is 0-1-2 over his last 3 starts surrendering 9 goals over that time. Taylor Pyatt's attempt in the 6th round of the SO that would have extended the frame was stuffed by Dallas goalie Marty Turco. T-Py is currently 1 for 8 this season on SO attempts. In other words Pyatt is converting SO attempts at 12.5% rate.

* Adrian Aucoin had a powerplay assist as the Calgary Flames mounted a 3 goal comeback over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes to pull off a 4-3 SO win. Aucoin has 7 goals and 18 assists for 25 points on 49 games. He has recorded over half his points (13, 3 goals, 10 assists) on the powerplay.

Robitaille has 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists) on 42 games.

* Goalie Chris Osgood stopped 22 of 23 shots as the Detroit Red Wings beat the host Boston Bruins 3-1. Osgood improved to 22-3-2 with the win and has an impressive .927 save percentage and a paltry 1.84 goals against average.

Zednik snapped a 16 game point-less streak and a 20 game goal-less streak with his game winning tally with 1:05 remaining in regulation. Prone to on-and-off play this streak of offensive ineffectiveness was especially tough on Zed. He now has 10 goals and 8 assists for 18 points on 50 games. It was the 4th game winner of the season for Zednik. Olli Jokinen's powerplay goal less than 5 minutes earlier had knotted the score at 2. O-Jok has 25 goals and 26 assists for 51 points on 54 games.
