Tuesday December 23-Sunday January 4

Former Islander Watch took a break (a long break) for the holiday season. We are back with updates from the last 2 weeks but to keep the tedium to a minimum we will be recapping specific player accomplishments not game recap formats. Here we go:

Philadelphia Flyers' winger Arron Asham had an assists over 2 games. Asham notched a helper on the lone Flyers' goal on December 26 as they fell to the host Chicago Blackhawks 6-1. Asham has not played since December 27. He has 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points on 36 games.




Calgary Flames' defenseman Adrian Aucoin had 2 goals and an assist over the last 5 games. The points were in 3 consecutive games from December 26-31. The goal on the 26th was the game winner in a 6-3 victory over the visiting Ottawa Senators. The winner was the 15th of Aucoin's career. He now has 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points on 39 games.



Calgary Flames' winger Todd Bertuzzi had a productive stretch scoring 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points over 5 games. Bert notched the game winner in the Flames' 3-2 win over the host Nashville Predators on January 3. The winner was Bertuzzi's 3rd of the year and 33rd of his career. Bert now has 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points on 39 games. For the 2nd straight season and 10th time on his career Bertuzzi has reached the 30+ point plateau. He is currently tied for 3rd on the Flames in points.

Toronto Maple Leafs' winger Jason Blake did okay for himself notching 2 goals and an assist for 3 points on 5 tilts. Blake scored a goal and added an assist during the Leafs' 3-1 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators on January 3. Blakey has 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points on 35 games.




Boston Bruins' captain and d-man Zdeno Chara managed only a goal and an assist for 2 points on 5 contests. Both points came in the Bs' 5-2 victory over the host Pittsburgh Penguins on December 30. Chara now has 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points on 39 games.




Pittsburgh Penguins' winger Ruslan Fedotenko kept up his recent good play with 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points on 5 games. Fedo scored the lone goal in the Pens' 1-0 edging of the host New Jersey Devils on December 26. The game winner was Fedotenko's 3rd of the season and 28th of his career. Tank now has 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points on 37 games. For the 8th straight season Fedotenko has reached the 10+ goal plateau. As well, it was the 6th consecutive season and 7th overall time that Fedo has reached 10+ assists. In all 8 of his seasons Fedotenko has managed 20+ points.

Edmonton Oilers' d-man Denis Grebeshkov notched points in only 1 of 5 games but it was a huge night. Greb scored a goal and added 3 assists for 4 points on December 31 as the Oil lost to the host Calgary Flames 6-4. Greb got involved in each of the team's goals for a career best single game effort. Grebeshkov now has 2 goals and 14 assists for 16 points on 35 games. The goal was the 5th of his young career. Grebeshkov is currently tied for 1st on the team in +/- rating with a +8.

Montreal Canadiens' d-man Roman Hamrlik had 1 assist on 5 games. Hammer notched a shorthanded helper during the Habs' 5-2 victory over the host Florida Panthers on December 29. The shortie helper was Hamrlik's 2nd of the season and first since October 20. Hamrlik now has 2 goals and 9 assists for 11 points on 27 games. Not to kill a dead horse but the shorthanded assist was an impressive #15 for Hammer's career.


Phoenix Coyotes' center Olli Jokinen had 2 goals and an assist for 3 points on 5 games. O-Jok even notched a goal against his old squad, the Isles, as the 'Yotes downed them 5-4 at home on January 2. Jokinen now has 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points on 34 games. Since the lockout Jokinen has played well against the Isles scoring 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) on 13 games including a 6 point (2 goal, 4 assist) effort against the Isles on March 17, 2007.

Washington Capitals' center Viktor Kozlov notched 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points on 5 games. Kozzer had 2 assists on December 30 as the Caps' downed the host Buffalo Sabres 4-2. Kozlov has 9 goals and 17 assists for 26 points on 35 games. For the 12th consecutive season Kozzer has reached the 25+ point mark.



Florida Panthers' d-man Bryan McCabe had a productive run scoring 2 goals and adding 3 assists for 5 points on 6 games. McCabe had a goal and an assist for 2 points on January 3 as the visiting Panthers thumped the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1. He now has 7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points on 29 games. McCabe is currently 5th on the Panthers in points scored and only 2 points behind Jay Bouwmeester for defensive scoring leader. Jay-Bo has played in 10 more games than McCabe. Florida has done well when McCabe manages a point going 8-5-2 in those 15 games.

Edmonton Oilers' winger Robert Nilsson had a goal and an assist over the last 5 competitions. Nilsson notched a powerplay tally on December 31 as the Oil fell to the host Calgary Flames 6-4. He now has 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points on 32 games. Half of his season points (6, 3 goals, 3 assists) have come with the man advantage.



Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood returned for a near 3 week hiatus due to injury (last game December 15) and continued his winning ways on January 3. Ozzie stopped 33 of 35 shots as the Wings edged the host Minnesota Wild 3-2. Osgood improved to 13-2-4 on the season with a 3.12 goals against average and an .880 save percentage. Ozzie has won 4 of his last 5 starts.


Dallas Stars' winger Mark Parrish scored 1 goal in 4 games. Parrish notched the game winning tally on New Year's Eve as the Stars knocked off the visiting New Jersey Devils 4-2. Parrish and 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points on 24 games this season. The winner was Parrish' 2nd of the season and the 39th of his career.



Columbus Blue Jackets' center Michael Peca scored a goal and added an assist for 2 points on 5 games. Peca notched the insurance goal as the Jacks blanked the host Anaheim Ducks 2-0 on December 31. Peca now has 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points on 34 games.




Vancouver Canucks' winger Taylor Pyatt broke his foot on December 26 as they fell to the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 at home. Pyatt is out at least 4 weeks.







Pittsburgh Penguins' winger Miroslav Satan is struggling as of late and only had 1 assist over 5 games (really his last 6 games). Satan had a helper on January first as the Pens fell to the host Boston Bruins 4-2. Miro has 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points on 39 games.




Colorado Avalanche winger Ryan Smyth netted a goal and added 2 assists for 3 points on 5 games. Smyth scored a goal and an assist on December 27 as the Avs downed the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-3. He now has 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points on 39 games. Smyth is currently 2nd on the team in goals and 3rd overall in points.



New York Rangers' backup goalie Stephen Valiquette lost in his only appearance of the last 3 weeks. Vali started the Blueshirts' January 3, a close 2-1 loss to the host Washington Capitals. Valiquette stopped 29 of 31 shots in 59 minutes of ice time. The loss dropped him to 4-3-0 on the season with a 2.36 goals against average, a .922 save percentage and 1 shutout.



Florida Panthers' winger Richard Zednik scored 1 goal in 5 games. Zed scored a powerplay goal on January 3 as the Panthers thumped the host Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1. Zednik now has 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points on 28 games. For the 11th consecutive season Zednik has reached 5+ goals.
