The Eastern Conference reserves for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game were announced on Thursday and much like yesterday's Western Conference unveiling there is a long Former Islander on the squad. Defenseman and captain Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins received the nod and it is rumored that he will be paired with Current Islander Mark Streit on the All-Star team's 2nd defensive pairing.
Chara is not quite on the offensive pace he was last season but he has managed a healthy 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points on 40 games. He also has 13 points on the special teams with 4 powerplay goals, 8 powerplay assists and a shorthanded helper. He is currently tied for 19th among league d-men in scoring, tied for 8th in goals, tied for 4th in +/- rating (+17) and is 6th in average time on the ice per game with 26 minutes and 22 seconds. Currently currently sits 1 helper away from career #200. This is Chara's 2nd nomination to the All-Star Game and has come in back-to-back seasons.
Congratulations to Zdeno on his All-Star accomplishment.
