The Islanders announced today, Thursday January 15, that they have agreed to terms with former goaltender Wade Dubielewicz on a one-way, 1 year deal that would have him finish out the 2008-09 with the team. Dubie was released last month by Ak-Bars Kazan of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. The only hurdles left are for Dubielewicz to receive a formal released from the KHL squad and clear NHL waivers.
One would imagine that this signing signals a few things including: 1) Rick DiPietro is going to be shut down for the rest of the season thanks to that mysterious knee swelling problem, 2) Joey MacDonald is seriously hurt and will be sidelined long term and 3) the Islanders are not feeling Yann Danis is a viable #1 considering his lack of long term NHL experience and would rather go with a goalie who has been in the unenviable position of injury starter. Even if losing is the best option at this point for the Isles they would seemingly rather lose with fan favorite Dubie in net.
Congratulations Wade and welcome home! We look forward to seeing you back in the Coliseum.
