There were a whopping 11 games on the NHL schedule Thursday night and Former Islanders did not fail to provide some support making impacts in 7 of those outings. Let us take a quick look at the FI happenings:
New Jersey backup goaltender Kevin Weekes played the final 20 minutes of ice time as the Devils were blanked by the visiting Atlanta Thrashers 4-0. Weekes faced only 5 shots stopping 4 of them en route to a no decision appearance. He remains 2-4-0 on the season but his save percentage dropped to .897 while his goals against averaged shaved a point or two to 3.06. The appearance was Weekes' first since December 13 when he started what turned out to be a 4-2 loss against the visiting Buffalo Sabres.
Montreal defenseman Roman Hamrlik received the primary assist on the Canadiens' 2nd goal only 4:59 in to play as the Habs thumped the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2. Hamrlik now has 4 assists over the last 2 games and has 2 goals and 13 assists for 15 points on 39 games. The last time Hamrlik had 4 points over 2 games was March 12-14, 2007 while still a member of the Calgary Flames. During that pair of games Hamrlik also recorded 4 helpers.
Detroit goalie Chris Osgood had one of his bet starts of the season stopping 22 of 23 shots faced as the Red Wings pounced all over the Dallas Stars for a 6-1 home win. Two starts in to 2009 and Ozzie has already nailed down to victories. With the win he improved to 14-2-4 on the season and is steadily improved his numbers. Ozzie's save percentage is no .883 while his goals against average is at 3.02. Osgood has won 5 of his last 6 starts but he has lumbered along. This game was only his 3rd start this season in which he has surrendered less than 2 goals.
Florida winger Richard Zednik provided the primary assist on the opening goal as the Panthers doubled up on the visiting Carolina Hurricanes for a 4-2 win. Zed is by no means a prolific scorer but he does find ways to help. He currently has 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points on 30 games. Zednik has notched 1 goal and a helper over the last 4 contests.
Colorado winger Ryan Smyth was the third star of the game for his effort as he netted a goal and added a powerplay assist on the game winner as the Avalanche edged the visiting Colorado Avalanche 2-1. Smyth opening the scoring only 5:10 in to play and then received the secondary helper on the winning tally with just under 7 minutes remaining in play to help lead the Avs' charge. Smyth now has 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points on 41 games. A dozen of his season's points (6 goals, 6 assists) have come with the man advantage. Smyth now has 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) over the last 2 games and 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in the last 8 overall.
Calgary d-man and FI Adrian Aucoin helped the Flames' bat around his old team as they downed the visiting Islanders 5-2. Aucoin had a pair of assists including one on the opening powerplay goal. Aucoin now has 6 goals and 10 goals for 16 points on 41 games. With the helpers Aucoin snapped a 3 game point-less streak. Since the lockout Aucoin has had 3 assists in the only 2 games he has played against his former team. For the 3rd straight season and 12th time on his career Aucoin has reached the 10+ assist mark.
Phoenix center Olli Jokinen opening his team's scoring as the Coyotes eked by the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning for a 3-2 win. O-Jok now has 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points on 36 games. Jokinen has notched 3 goals in the last 5 games. He is currently 2nd on the team in goals and points behind winger and captain Shane Doan who has 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists).
