Thursday January 29

With things back in full swing following the All-Star festivities the intensity in ramping up around the NHL. There were 9 games up for grabs on Thursday night and Former Islanders continue to provide support en masse. FIs tried to help in 4 of those tilts. Let us take a quick peek at the action:

Atlanta defenseman received the primary assist on the Thrashers' first goal only 26 seconds in to the 3rd Period as the home team nearly mounted a comeback from a 4-0 deficit before falling to the Isles 5-4. The Blue & Orange built a 4-0 lead after 1 but the Thrashers pulled the score within 1 midway through the 3rd Period before the Isles regrouped for the rare road win. The assist gives Schneids 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points on 37 games. The helper snapped a 3 game point-less streak and Schneider has managed 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) over the last 6 outings.

Florida winger Richard Zednik got in on the scoring fun recording the first insurance goal as the Panthers jacked the visiting Montreal Canadiens 5-1. The tally snapped a 3 game goal-less streak and Zed was honored with the second star of the game. He now has 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points on 37 games. Zednik has a respectable 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) over the last 5 games.

Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood did not have a solid start being pulled after the 1st Period as he surrendered 3 goals on 12 shots. Ozzie took the loss as the Red Wings fell to the visiting Dallas Stars 4-2. His record is now 15-4-6 on the season while his save percentage is a meager .880 and his goals against average is a bloated 3.29. It would appear that a goalie with only 4 regulation losses on 25 games is doing great but Ozzie seems to be puttering by riding on the shoulders of the normally superior Wings' offense.

It was a rare face off between 2 of the league's best FI wingers as Ryan Smyth and the Colorado Avalanche hosted Jason Blake and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs walked away with an impressive 7-4 victory. Red hot Jason Blake scored the game winning goal and added 2 assists. He was honored as the game's first star. Blake now has 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points on 45 games. He has goals in 3 straight games and over the last 3 games he has 6 points on 3 goals and 3 assists. Over the last 6 outings he has an impressive 11 points on 6 goals and 5 assists. His recently improved play puts him within 1 point of Nik Antropov for team lead in points scoring. Blake currently leads all Leafs in goals scored. Smyth did good himself assisting on a pair of goals. He snapped a 2 game mini-point-less streak and now has 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points on 49 games. Over the last 4 games he has 5 points on 1 goal and 4 assists. Over the last 10 games he has better than a point per game with 12 (4 goals, 8 assists).
