Thursday December 4

Thursday is typically a busier night around the NHL, a kind of build up to the Saturday marathon of games. There were 10 games on the schedule and Former Islanders made impacts in a hearty 6 of those tilts. Here is a quick look at a busier FI night:

Pittsburgh winger Miroslav Satan notched an insurance goal as the Penguins topped the host Carolina Hurricanes 5-2. The goal was Satan's 10th of the season and along with 9 assists he has 19 points on 25 games. With the netter Satan snapped a 5 game goal-less streak. Ruslan Fedotenko capped the scoring with a late goal. Fedo has 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points on 23 games. He also snapped a goal-less and point-less streak of 6 games with the score.

Washington forward Viktor Kozlov knocked home a goal for the 2nd straight game as the Capitals toppled the visiting Islanders 5-2. Kozzer's goal, a powerplay tally, staked the Caps to an early 2-0 lead. Kozlov now has 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points on 21 games. The last time Koz recorded goals in consecutive games was February 29-March 1 of last season. Kozlov has 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) over the last 2 games. The powerplay tally was his 1st of the year and extends his consecutive seasons with at least 1 powerplay score to 13.

Montreal defenseman Roman Hamrlik notched the primary assist on the game winning late in the 1st Period as the Canadiens thumped the visiting New York Rangers 6-2. Hamrlik has 2 goals and 6 assists for 8 points on 24 games. The game was a momentous one for Hammer as it was career #1,100. Congratulations Roman on making it this far!

Vancouver winger Taylor Pyatt opened the scoring only 1:35 in to regultion but it was a losing cause for the Canucks as they were edged by the host Detroit Red Wings 6-5. Pyatt now has 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points on 26 games. For the 8th straight season T-Py has record double digit points. Holding down the fort (kind of) for the Wings was goalie Chris Osgood who stopped 20 of 25 shots faced for the win. It has been a mixed message season for Ozzie who has an impressive record (11-1-4) but awful numbers (3.17 goals against average, .876 save percentage). He has gone 15 straight games without losing in regulation compiling an 11-0-4 record over that span yet his play has been wildly inconsistent. Osgood has surrendered 3 or more goals in 11 of those contests including 7 in an OT loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. His is truly a case of success in spite of inadequacy.

Colorado winger Ryan Smyth knocked home the Avalanche's first goal of the game as they were edged by the host Nashville Predator's 3-2. To make it worse the Av's gave up the winning goal with 1 second remaining the 1st Period! Smyth now has 8 goals and 6 assists for 14 points on 25 games. Smyth has scored 3 goals over the last 5 games with half of his season goals (4) coming on the man advantage.

Rumor has it Toronto winger Jason Blake is not happy but he did manage to turn the gears up and notch 3 points as the Maple Leafs fell to the host Phoenix Coyotes 6-3. Blake scored a goal and added 2 assists to lead the Leafs' charge. Blake now has 4 goals and 9 assists for 13 points on 22 games. The 3 point effort was his first since March 8 of last season when he also recorded a goal and 2 assists. The netter snapped a 4 game goal-less streak.
