There were 5 more games up for grabs on Tuesday night. Former Islanders made their presences known in 3 of those high-octane tilts. Here is a brief recap of the FI action:
Atlanta defenseman Mathieu Schneider made his first impact on the boxscore notching an assist on the Thrashers' 2nd goal as they fell to the visiting Minnesota Wild 4-2. The loss was surprisingly the first regulation defeat for the Thrashers through 3 games. Schneider now has 1 assist in those 3 games but is also lagging with a -4 rating.
Whoda thunk that enforcer Eric Godard will already have recorded a point for his new team the Pittsburgh Penguins? Only 4 games in to his tenure with the Pens and Godard assisted on his team's 2nd goal as Pittsburgh overcame a Philadelphia comeback to pull off a 3-2 OT win. Godard had all of 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) last season in 74 games with the Calgary Flames. He has never had more than 4 points on a season and that was back during the 2005-06 season while still with the Isles. The helper snapped Godard's point drought at 20 games including 5 playoff battles from the 2008 postseason.
A pair of competing FIs made waves in Calgary's 5-4 squeaker of a win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche. Note to Colorado: Peter Budaj sucks! Flames' winger Todd Bertuzzi scored a powerplay goal only 4:17 in to play and then capped it with the even strength game winner with only 9 minutes left to record the 2 goal effort. Bert is off to a fast start with 3 goals in the first 3 games of the season. Actually, all 3 tallies have come in the last 2 games. The last time Bertuzzi had a multi-goal game was January 18, a span of 40 games without such an occurrence (inclusive of 6 playoff games). The last time Bertuzzi had goals in consecutive games was during a 3 game stretch between January 9-15. As stated, there were 2 FIs involved. On the other bench Ryan Smyth chipped in a 2 point effort with a powerplay goal an a powerplay assist. Captain Canada finally found it to the scoresheet after falling to notch a point in the first 2 games. Smyth now has 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) on the first 3 games of the season.
