Here at FIW we are hoping this post is not too presumptive. Reports out of Toronto have it that Toronto Maple Leaf defenseman Bryan McCabe will be moved around 11 pm EST tonight in exchange for Florida Panther d-man Mike Van Ryn. Word also has it that Toronto is adding a mid-round draft pick with McCabe to sweeten the deal. We will update on that as more becomes known. Update: It's official! The move was made late last night as the Panthers did in fact send d-man Van Ryn to the Leafs for McCabe and a 4th Round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Case closed on the McCabe rumors.
Originally drafted in the 2nd Round, 40th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Isles, McCabe has spent the last 7 seasons in Toronto following two and a half on the Island, two and a half with Vancouver and one with Chicago. Quickly promoted to assistant captain in Toronto, McCabe was under the microscope for most of his tenure with the Blue and White due to the lucrative contract he had inked. A 917 game veteran, McCabe has a 115 goals and 303 assists for 418 career points. He has a career +37 rating with 1,574 penalty minutes and 20 game winners. A force on the man advantage, McCabe has 59 powerplay goals and a 151 extra man assists along with 4 shorties and 9 shorthanded assists for 223 points on the special teams. Florida picks up the last 3 years of his contract and will pay McCabe $4.15 million per year since the Leafs have already paid the $2 million bonus that was due to Bryan on September 1.
We wish Bryan the best in South Florida no matter how lateral this move may be.
